Hi
my name is Keith Whiting, I am a record producer and
have worked with many of the biggest names in jazz and
R&B. I first became interested in how babies react
to music a number of years ago when some very good friends
of mine had their first baby.
While
visiting they told me how much trouble they were having
getting the child to sleep and how she would sometime
just start crying for no apparent reason and nothing
they did seemed to make any difference. Then right on
cue the baby let out a wail that could wake the neighborhood.
They were both tired and frustrated and never having
had any children I just assumed this was what every
child was like.
I
had the first pressing of a new CD I’d recorded
and asked if they’d like to listen, although with
the baby crying I wasn’t sure how much we’d
be able to hear it, let alone appreciate it.
The
first song, a jazz ballad, started playing and almost
immediately the baby’s cry turned to a whimper,
and then stopped completely. The next song came on,
something a bit more up-tempo, and the baby let out
another wail. I made a joke about a tough critic and
my friends asked me to play the first song again. Sure
enough, the baby stopped crying until the second song
came on, then let out another wail. It was like something
from one of those world’s funniest videos.
They
asked me to leave the CD with them. A week later they
called to tell me, whenever they played the first song
the baby would stop crying.
I
had long known the power of music, you hear a sad song
that immediately reminds you of a lost love, an up-tempo
song from your teenage years plays on the car radio
and you start driving faster, a haunting melody brings
a lump to your throat, and patriotic songs that inspire
people to fight for their country.
I
started researching the effect of music on babies. Recorded
some demos and gave them to parents of newborns and
young kids, and asked for their response. Then produced
a CD of lullabies that went on to be certified “Gold”.
In
Florida, all state-funded pre-schools are required to
play classical music by law.

Music
aids the development of speech according to Jessica
Pitt of the Pre-School Music Association. |
|
Music
helps children learn math. “When children
learn rhythm, they are learning ratios, fractions
and proportions,” says Professor Gordon Shaw,
University of California, Irvine. |
I
continued researching, playing different styles of music
to babies, listening to other CDs of baby songs, some
recorded with the sound of heartbeats to mimic the sounds
in the womb, some incorporating the sounds of nature,
some vocal, some instrumental, and some recorded by
pregnant musicians!

Music
enhances social skills. “The emotional aspect
of musical activities seems to be beneficial for
developing social skills like empathy,” says
Dr. Alexandra Lamont, Lecturer in the Psychology
of music at the University of Keele. |
|
Dr.
Frances Rauscher of the University of Wisconsin,
says, “Music helps improve children’s
ability to reason abstractly, by strengthening neural
firing patterns of the brain”. |
I
listened to Classical lullabies, Irish lullabies, Hawaiian
lullabies, American lullabies, Spanish lullabies, Italian
lullabies, Austrian lullabies, English lullabies, African
lullabies.
I
collected Classical baby songs, Irish baby songs, Hawaiian
baby songs, American baby songs, Spanish baby songs,
Italian baby songs, Austrian baby songs, English baby
songs, African baby songs.
I
listened to 50 different versions of Brahms lullaby
and goodnight!
I
checked out children’s nursery rhymes, more baby
songs, and even more lullabies. I had the world’s
largest collection of children’s nursery rhymes,
lullabies and baby songs ever owned by a single guy!
And
I discovered two things, there were some very good ones
and lots of bad ones, and of course you couldn’t
tell which was which until you got them home. The second
thing I discovered was that most of them covered the
same music in similar styles.

Never too Early to Introduce Your Baby to Music!

Studies
by two of the leading early childhood researchers,
Thomas R. Verny and Rene Van De Carr, have shown
that babies who have been stimulated while in the
womb exhibit advanced visual, auditory, language
and motor development skills. They state “these
babies sleep better, are more alert to their environment
and surroundings and are far more content than infants
who did not receive any form of prenatal stimulation.
|
Research has shown that babies liked a wide range of
music, everything from jazz to folk to classical, and
that as they got older they reacted to more and more
complex arrangements.
|
“Hearing
complex sound patterns helps develop the brain”,
says Alexander Barzvi, child and adolescent psychologist
at the New York University Child Study Center. |
|
“Diversity
of different kinds of music are essential and can
be useful for the baby’s future writing, reading
and language skills,” says Dr. Philip A. De
Fina, associate professor at the New York University
School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and
Behavioral Neuroscience, and chief neuropsychologist
and director of neurotherapies at the NYU Brain
Research laboratories. |
I
determined to create a range of CDs that would be available
by subscription (1 CD per month). A series that would
cover all styles of music and would grow in complexity
as the child grew, providing enough interest to nourish
the babies rapidly developing brain while both interesting
and relaxing the parents.
The
result is Dreams and Lullabies.
